Airports are logically the most common places for cars to be hired. However, before you decide to rent a car at an airport make sure you fully understand your rental terms and conditions, especially regarding the Airport Surcharge. The fee for renting a car at an airport can be negligable but there are many destinations in the world where the surcharge is as much as $30. Therefore some experienced travellers prefer to use public transport at the airport and hire their cars in another location.

This approach is sometimes preferable regardless the airport surcharge because of long waiting times for a car-rental shuttle (the rule is that 3 empty shuttles of a competing rental company leave before the shuttle of your company...)

Smaller airports (more exactly most airports except the largest ones) usually have their car-rental companies located directly in the arrival hall and there is no need to take a shuttle to get the car.

When booking at an airport, knowing the airport code will usually make the process smoother.
